movie revisionists

I just saw George Lucas's Director's Cut (AKA Special Edition) of THX-1138. It looked FANTASTIC. It's such a cool movie. It's been cleaned up, some editing, and a bunch of CGI added in. I loved it. It's unbelievable how advanced and visionary this film was. Unfortunately some die-hard fans are criticizing Lucas for "ruining" his films. Just like the backlash of the Special Edition Star Wars, it's happening again with the new version of THX-1138.

As an artist, I stand by the artist. If Lucas wasn't happy with his films, and adds some finishing touches to it, to fulfill his vision. Then LET HIM. What if Picasso ran out of paint, came back when he could afford more paint, and finished his painting. Would people complain? Probably. But I wouldn't care. I might have my preference. But that's me. I'll accept the artist final vision over MY preference anyday. Same goes for movies. Because movie making is an art. Yeah, it's sometimes (manytimes) exploited for the mighty BUCK. But some of the best pieces costs less and have even less recognition than the popular stuff. I'm glad that George can afford to finish his movies. Now only if Terry Gilliam would do the same.
