the disillusioned warrior, part 5

...Once upon a time, there was a magnificent warrior turned artist. Tired of old meaningless wars, but lacking resources while educating him, he re-employed himself under a new banner. He was also deeply in love with a princess he saved from her demon captors.

One day he met a beautiful Elven blacksmith. The two of them were under the same employ. The pay was meager, but the people were good. They frequently had to work together. She had to repair worn weapons & armor. And the warrior, being in charge of the soldiers, had to make sure they were fit and proper for their crown. They frequently met for short meals or errands. They developed a bond that soon became love. They discussed friends, lovers, life and death. But their closeness was interpreted by others, including some of the lords and magistrates, as an affair. As much as they wished it was, it wasn't. The warrior stayed loyal to his princess and the elf bravely and painfully kept her distance. But the rumors spread anyway, each of them being pulled aside to be interrogated and tortured. But the dark version of the truth would never be admitted and still the torment continued. Friendships were betrayed and enemies were formed. The warrior and the elf were forced appart by their peers. The queen during this reign befriended both elf and warrior early on, but when the queen's integrity was questioned and criticized by her followers, the warrior and the elf couldn't defend the queen. Instead the warrior and the elf, through a letter correspondence, supported the criticism. The message was intercepted when the elf relieved herself of her position. The queen felt betrayed and later left the throne but not without placing a black mark on the warrior’s name. A few months later, the queen died of unrelated heartache but the elf was never heard from again.
